Cam has dealt with trauma from his first wife. She was abusive to Cam and would have been to son Daniel as well, but Cam protected him (and was abused in Daniel's place). She later attempted to murder him and committed suicide. Ainsley works for the Queen. She did something in her past and carries regret. Her brother and her (now deceased) husband rescued her. She loves her family and tries to always do the right thing. She is trying to retrieve some letters that the Queen wrote and ends up in Cam's bedchamber. It's familiar because she was caught by him 6 years ago for a similar reason. Needless to say, that first time made an impression.
Ainsley is someone who is honest and doesn't throw herself at him. She also sees Cam for the lonely and somewhat broken human he is. And he sees Ainsley too. This was a very nice story of 2 lonely people who find each other and realize they have a lot in common. They gradually fall for each other despite their pasts. This family is fun to read. They are different and they love and support each other just as they are. Daniel is very perceptive and forthright for his age. Good introduction with next book- Hart and Eleanor.
Note: Ainsley's maiden name is McBride and her brothers are Patrick, Sinclair, Elliot, and Steven. They also have books in this series.
