Review: Duke of Sin

Duke of Sin Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Spoilers for previous books.
This is Val's (Eve's brother) and Bridget's (the housekeeper) story. In the previous books, Val is the villain (blackmail, kidnapping) and he seem to relish it. He wants power and sees this as a way to get it. After reading Eve's story and her background, you can guess Val had a similar experience. Their father was an abusive asshole. It was worse too that Val's mother didn't seem to care for her son either. The reason given was because he looked like his father. As a result, Val doesn't know how to love and show it (he gifts Eve a dove for example). Val also came across as a bid socially awkward.
Bridget entered Val's employ to find some letters that were used to blackmail her mother into introducing Eve into a social circle (for the orphanage). Bridget shares her mother's distinctive hair color. She wasn't raised by her mother, but a foster family. Her foster mother loved her as her own. She chose to enter into service to be able to provide for herself.
I liked that Bridget really saw through Val and she sees him do some ugly things. Some of the things were necessary (what he did to the Duke of Dyemore) and not (what he did to Cal, more kidnapping) for example. I liked that they both accept the other as they are. I did think the ending was a bit rushed; glad for the epilogue. And yep- he never left England.
Next is Alf's story (and Hugh (Duke of Kyle) that was introduced in this one).

Review: Midnight's Warrior

Midnight's Warrior Midnight's Warrior by Donna Grant
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5*
I did liked this better than Midnight's Seduction. This was Ramsey and Tara's story. Tara has been on the run for 10 years (since she turned 18). She was abused by her mother because she wouldn't do the ritual that would turn her drough (evil Druid, the mie's are the good). After she left home, she was taken in and groomed by Declan. She escaped after she overheard something she shouldn't have. Now she is hunted by Declan. Ramsey is a Warrior, but is also a Druid. His Druid heritage he has hidden, in part because of Deirdre and he feels it doesn't mix well with being a Warrior (control is an issue). Everyone learns Ramsey's background in this one.
Ramsey catches up to Tara while she is working as a castle guide. Things happen and she is welcomed to MacLeod Castle. Other things happen. A few characters die (minor ones). A major event happens with Declan. Who knows if Jason Wallace (a cousin?) will play a roll in future books. Or not.

Review: Hard Rustler

Hard Rustler Hard Rustler by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Annabelle is back in town to sell her grandma's house. 13 years ago she left her small town to pursue her dream. She had something happen and was blacklisted in her career (she was/is a model). Now, she is broke, not working. Dawson was her high school BF and she broke his heart when she left. Granted, he didn't say anything/do anything to talk her into staying.
Overall I did like this and the various points of view. I would have liked more suspense. Annabelle was also a hard person to like at first. She was snobby, but also a bit misunderstood. The reason why she got blacklisted was revealed and glossed over. Dawson was a bit angsty for a guy in his 30s. The wrap-up is a little fast and would have liked a bit more. Oh well. This was a nice, solid read.
